The School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (SKHB) at IPB University recently hosted the Training and Certification for Veterinary Practitioners of Laboratory Animals from June 25 to 28. This event, in collaboration with the National Professional Certification Agency (BNSP), was attended by 22 participants, including faculty members and practitioners. This marks the second time such training has been organized for veterinarians and practitioners specializing in laboratory animals.

The four-day event commenced with comprehensive lectures on laboratory animals. Key speakers included Dr. Chairun Nisa’, M.Si, PAVet, who discussed “Sample Collection and Animal Isolation”; Dr. Aulia Andi Mustika, M.Si, who presented on “Biosecurity and Biosafety Implementation & Occupational Safety in Animal Health”; Dr. Safika, M.Kes, who covered “Animal Welfare Status”; Prof. Arief Boediono, Ph.D., PAVet(K), who emphasized “Laboratory Animal Quality Assurance”; and Dr. Savitri Novelina, M.Si, PAVet, who talked about “Laboratory Animal Maintenance.”

On the second day, the lectures continued with Dr. Huda Shalahudin Darusman, M.Si, Ph.D, presenting “Evaluating Animal Treatment & Designating Laboratory Animals for Biomedical Research”; Prof. Ekowati Handharyani, MS, Ph.D, discussing “Organizing Work & Ensuring Biomedical Research Outcomes Using Animals and/or Veterinary Research”; and Prof. Agus Setiyono, MS, Ph.D, APVet, who elaborated on “Using Laboratory Animals for Biomedical Research & Performing Euthanasia.”

The third day focused on practical sessions involving laboratory animals. Participants engaged in animal identification, handling and restraint, medication application, and euthanasia techniques. On the final day, participants undertook the Competency Examination for Veterinary Practitioners of Laboratory Animals, overseen by two assessors from the Veterinary Health Professional Certification Institute (LSP KESWAN) and the National Professional Certification Agency (BNSP).
