ABSTRACT
This research was conducted to determine xylazine potency as an alternative anaesthesia in transportation of catfish. This research used xylazine as anaestethicum in catfish by dipping method. The research used 650 catfish with body weight about 6 grams and body length about 5 cm. This research used six treatments and five replications. The catfish were divided into 6 dosage groups of xylazine i.e., 0 (as a control), 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 ppm. The anaesthesia effects were observed as imbalance and less muscle tone, lost of some reflex functions, and also reduced in pain perseption. Dipping with 40 ppm dosage had the onset of 96,2 minutes, the duration of 229,2 minutes, and 0% mortality. Onset and duration of anaesthesia could reflect the effectiveness of xylazine utilization as an alternative anaesthesia in transportation of catfish. The result showed that 40 ppm xylazine was the effective dosage for anaesthesia in transportation of catfish.
